Your Amex Platinum Renewal Just Hit $895. Run the Math Before You Pay.

AmEx raised the Platinum annual fee from $695 to $895, a 29% jump. Existing cardholders started seeing the new bill at any renewal on or after January 2, 2026. Here is how to decide if the refreshed credits actually clear the fee for you.

If you carry the American Express Platinum card and your renewal statement just landed for $895, you have about thirty days to make a call. Keep it, downgrade it, or cancel. The right answer depends on whether you actually use the credits AmEx bundled in to justify the $200 hike.

Existing cardholders started seeing the $895 fee at any renewal on or after January 2, 2026. New applicants have been paying it since September 18, 2025. This is the first fee change on the Platinum since 2021, when it climbed from $550 to $695. The new number is a 29% jump on top of that.

AmEx did not just raise the price. It repackaged the card with a stack of new statement credits that the company says are worth about $3,500 if you use every one. Notice the “if.” The bundle includes a $600 hotel credit for prepaid stays through AmEx Travel or Fine Hotels & Resorts, a $400 dining credit split into monthly buckets, $300 in Uber credits ($15 a month plus a $200 December bonus), $200 for Resy dining, $155 in Walmart+ credits, and $300 in digital entertainment. The credits are real. They are also structured to expire monthly or annually, which is the bank’s bet: most cardholders will only clean out a fraction of the pile.

Here’s what they don’t tell you. AmEx’s own Q1 2026 earnings said card fee revenue jumped 18% and retention held near 100%. Translation: they raised the price, nobody left, revenue went up. If nobody quits, they’ll do it again.

Do the math on what you actually used last year.

Pull your Platinum statements for the last twelve months. Add up the credits you actually redeemed: the Uber rides, the Walmart+ months you took, the dining credit months you remembered, the hotel prepay if you booked one. If the total is more than $895 and Centurion or Priority Pass lounge access is worth another $100 to $200 to you a year, keep the card. If your realized credits landed under $500, you are paying $895 for lounge access and status you might not use. Not worth it.

If the card no longer clears the fee, downgrade before you cancel. A downgrade to the Amex Gold, currently at a $325 annual fee, keeps your account history, your Membership Rewards points, and your credit line, and hands you a card with a stronger multiplier on groceries and restaurants. Canceling closes the account and can pull down your average age of credit, which is a small but real ding on your score.

Do this now. Log into your AmEx account, find the Downgrade Options or Product Change link under account services, and see what alternate cards AmEx will offer. Call the retention line on the back of the card if the online list is thin. If AmEx has a retention offer, they usually surface it when you say the fee is too high.

If you use the credits, the new Platinum still earns its keep. If you don’t, $895 is a bank charging you rent on a wallet of vouchers you keep forgetting to spend. Only you know which one you are.

Frequently asked questions

When do existing Amex Platinum cardholders see the new $895 fee?

At their first card renewal on or after January 2, 2026. If your card renews in November, you don't see the $895 fee until November 2026.

How do I downgrade Amex Platinum to Amex Gold?

Log into your AmEx account, find Downgrade Options or Product Change under account services, or call the retention line printed on the back of the card. A downgrade keeps your account history, your Membership Rewards points, and your credit line. A cancellation closes the account and can drop your average age of credit.
