Paying Off the Car Early Might Save You Nothing. One Word in the Contract Decides.

A simple interest car loan rewards early payoff. A precomputed one refunds you by formula, and federal law only forces the fair formula above 61 months. CFPB complaints about the end of a car loan just passed complaints about getting one.

You scraped together the money, called for the payoff, and the number barely moved. That is not a billing error. That is the kind of contract you signed.

Car loans come in two shapes. A simple interest loan accrues interest daily on what you still owe, so every early dollar kills future interest. A precomputed loan calculates the whole finance charge up front and bakes it into the total of payments. Pay a precomputed loan early and you do not stop paying interest. You get a refund credit, figured by a formula your contract and your state pick.

Those formulas are not equal.

Where people are actually getting hurt

We pulled the CFPB’s public complaint database and counted. Through September 17 this year there were 17,533 complaints about vehicle loans and leases, against 14,052 in the same stretch of 2025. A 25 percent rise.

Complaints about the end of the loan rose more than twice as fast. “Problems at the end of the loan or lease” went from 1,791 to 2,775, up 55 percent, and it has now passed “Getting a loan or lease,” which slipped to 1,825. A year ago the ranking was the other way around.

The biggest single piece: 1,370 people could not get their title or hit some other wall after the loan was paid off, against 791 last year. Another 548 had trouble paying the loan off at all.

The end of a car loan now generates more complaints than the beginning of one.

The 61-month line

Here is the part nobody raises at the desk. 15 U.S.C. 1615 says a creditor has to promptly refund unearned interest when you prepay. On a precomputed transaction with a term longer than 61 months, signed after September 30, 1993, it has to use “a method which is at least as favorable to the consumer as the actuarial method.” That rules out the front-loaded ones.

Shorter than that, the federal floor does not apply and your state’s does. Texas is a fair example. Section 348.120 of the Finance Code sets the minimum refund by subtracting a $25 acquisition cost from the original time price differential, which is what Texas calls the finance charge, then applying the ratio of your remaining monthly balances to all the monthly balances in the schedule. Front-loaded by design. And if the math lands under a dollar, you get nothing.

This does not make the seven-year loan smart. It costs more interest and a shorter term is still the better buy. It does mean the shorter precomputed note is the one carrying the weaker prepayment protection, which is the reverse of what most people would guess.

Do this

Find the contract and look for the word precomputed, or a fixed finance charge with a refund-credit clause. Ask in writing if it is not obvious.

Ask the servicer for a payoff quote with the date it is good through and the daily interest figure. Pay by certified funds or electronic transfer so there is a timestamp on the day the clock starts.

Then chase the title. Set a reminder 30 days out. If it has not arrived, put the complaint in writing and file with the CFPB, knowing what that buys you: a dated response, not usually a check. How hard you can push depends on your state, and the range is wide. Missouri, for one, puts a dollar schedule on a late lien release.

And run the term itself before you sign the next one. Our loan calculator will show you what each extra year costs in interest, which is the number the finance office would rather talk around. More on the auto-loan side at our loans hub.

Frequently asked questions

How do I tell if my car loan is simple interest or precomputed?

Read the contract, not the statement. A simple interest contract says interest accrues daily on the unpaid principal balance. A precomputed contract states a fixed finance charge and a total of payments up front and includes a clause about a refund credit if you prepay. If the document uses the word precomputed, or promises a refund of unearned finance charge on early payoff, it is precomputed. If you cannot tell, ask the servicer in writing which one you have and which statute governs the refund.

What does federal law require when I prepay?

15 U.S.C. 1615 requires the creditor to promptly refund any unearned portion of the interest charge when you prepay in full, with no refund owed if the amount is under $1. For a precomputed transaction with a term longer than 61 months that was signed after September 30, 1993, the refund has to be computed by a method at least as favorable to you as the actuarial method. Below that term, the federal statute does not impose that method and your state's formula controls.

What does a state formula actually look like?

Texas is a usable example. Finance Code section 348.120 sets the minimum refund credit on a monthly-installment vehicle contract by first subtracting a $25 acquisition cost from the original time price differential, then multiplying by a percentage figured from the sum of your remaining monthly balances divided into the sum of all monthly balances in the payment schedule. That ratio is front-loaded, so the refund is small late in the loan. The statute also says no refund credit is required if it comes to less than $1.

Does filing a CFPB complaint get my money back?

Rarely money, usually a record. Of the 2,775 vehicle loan complaints filed in 2026 through September 17 about problems at the end of the loan or lease, 122 were closed with monetary relief and 2,215 were closed with an explanation. That is 4.4 percent getting money. File anyway, because the complaint forces a dated written response from the company and that is what you need if the argument goes further.
